Sylhet city polls: Yahya Chowdhury expelled from Jatiya Party

Jatiya Party (JaPa) Vice-Chairman and former member of the parliament for Sylhet-2 constituency Yahya Chowdhury has been expelled from his party position.

Jatiya Party Central Office Secretary MA Razzak Khan confirmed the matter on Monday.

He said Yahya was previously served a show-cause notice due to allegations of breaking party discipline.

However, given his unsatisfactory response, he has been suspended from the post of vice-chairman upon the recommendation of the party's Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu.

Yahya Chowdhury was informed about this in a circular on Sunday.

Previously, in the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) election, Yahya Chowdhury publicly asked for votes for the Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, even though Jatiya Party's candidate was contesting in the poll.

As a result, members of the Jatiya Party from the Sylhet district and metropolitan area expressed their fury over his actions.

Following these events, Yahya was first served a show-cause notice and then finally suspended.
