BNP: 1,209 cases under Digital Security Act in 4 years

The opposition BNP has expressed concern saying 1,209 cases have been filed under the Digital Security Act in four years.

The party once again demanded the repeal of the act in a press conference at the BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Wednesday morning.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir highlighted the party's stance on the act at the press meet.

It was said on behalf of the party that there had been a discussion in the party's standing committee meeting about the misuse of the act.

The BNP leader said that its standing committee feels that the democratic and constitutional rights of the people are being severely violated and human rights are being violated through the arrest and detention of dissidents, journalists, and opposition party leaders through the act.

The misuse of this law against innocent people is taking away the freedom of the media, said Fakhrul.

The BNP also demanded the immediate release of those imprisoned under this law and the repeal of the act.

Fakhrul said that the BNP has expressed deep concern as news has been published in the media of the country and abroad that technology has been purchased from an Israeli company to monitor mobile phone and internet communication.

At the same time, concern was expressed about the home minister's announcement of legislation on telephone tapping in parliament.

He also said that the meeting thinks that the current “authoritarian, unelected government” is going to enact hacking laws and purchase related technology to keep the opposition party leaders and workers under surveillance with the aim of “perpetuating the power seized by illegal means”.

In the BNP meeting, it was urged to refrain from buying these technologies immediately and making illegal attempts.
