Jamalpur Awami League leader suspended over Facebook post

Jamalpur district unit Awami League's joint general secretary has been suspended by the district unit of the party over a Facebook post.

A letter signed by Jamalpur unit Awami League President Advocate Muhammad Baki Billah and General Secretary Faruque Ahmed Chowdhury was sent to Prof Md Suruzzamanon on Sunday.

The letter says Md Suruzzaman posted a status on his Facebook profile saying that he wanted to see a rebel candidate in the Dewanganj municipal polls Mayor Sheikh Md Noor Nabi Apu as the general secretary of the upazila unit Awami League.

Suruzzaman is being suspended under Article 47(9) of the Constitution, the letter reads.

The letter also demands an explanation as to why the party should not relieve him of his post in seven days.

In this regard, Md Suruzzaman said he has received the letter from the Jamalpur unit Awami League.

“I have never posted anything on my Facebook profile that would insult any leader from my party. I did not write that status which lead to my temporary suspension to be on to bad side of Awami League. I think they have misunderstood my status,” he said.

“The party wants a written explanation and I will absolutely send them that. But I do not think they can send a letter like this over just a Facebook post. it is an organizational injustice towards me,” he added.

Suruzzaan also noted that he plans to approach the central leaders of Awami League in this regard.
