Rebel candidate of the ruling Awami League for Kishoreganj 4 by-poll Sayed Mohitul Islam Asheem alleged that Rejwan Ahmed Toufiq, the party backed candidate, had been breaking electoral codes of conduct and the law enforcers were not taking any measures against him.
Asheem, publicity secretary of Astagram upazila unit of the party said Toufiq, the eldest son of President Abdul Hamid, was using the government rest house and pasting posters on restricted walls by violating the rules.
“OCs of three police stations are not taking any steps against him, as he is the son of the president,” Asheem alleged, and expressed concerns that fare election was not possible in such situation.
Toufiq and Asheem are going to participate in the by-polls of Kishoreganj 4, scheduled to be held on July 3. Around 277,000 voters of Ostogram, Mithamain and Itna upazila are expected to cast their votes in the by-poll.
As part of his electoral campaign, Asheem told the voters that he does not belong to any party, adding that every voter is his men.
He also claimed that he was only participating in the poll as a protest to bring a change to the leadership of 42 years, which had been in the central power leaving the mass people in an uncomfortable situation.
Regarding the allegation against the law enforcers, Asheem said he submitted a written complaint to the election commission demanding that all three OCs of three police stations of the constituency be withdrawn.
He alleged that the OCs had been threatening his men to stop election campaigning.
In reply to the complaint, Election Commissioner Zabed Ali advised Asheem to submit the complaint to high officials of the police.
Zabed Ali meanwhile said: “The commission has taken all steps to hold a fair and peaceful election.”
“BGB, RAB, Police and Ansar troops will be deployed on the day of election, while coast guards will be deployed if necessary,” the EC added.
