BNP demands resignation of NHRC chief over Limon issue

The main opposition BNP on Wednesday came down heavily on National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman, and demanded his resignation for ‘proposing’ that Rab-tortured Limon should withdraw his cases filed against the elite police force.

In a press release, BNP’s Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the NHRC boss himself violated human rights by playing such a “heinous role.”

“It has been proven once again that this commission is not independent and neutral. In the name of protecting human rights, (Mizanur) is trying to conceal government misdeeds,” the release said.

It also said: “Dr Mizanur Rahman has set a condemnable, irrational example. Therefore, he should quit his office immediately.”

The press release claimed Mizanur had recently urged Limon, who was maimed allegedly by Rab personnel, to withdraw cases filed by his mother against the elite force officials. Limon was reportedly shot on March 23, 2011, at Saturia in Jhalakathi, the village he lives in.

Fakhrul called Mizanur’s proposal for compromise “inhumane, unjustified and against the fundamental rights of a citizen.”

The opposition leader alleged the NHRC chairman took this initiative for no reason but to save the accused Rab members.

“The human rights situation of the country will be deteriorated if a person of the National Human Rights Commission chairman’s stature starts to behave in such a way . Members of the law enforcement agencies will become more ferocious, and the common people’s lives and properties will become insecure. The people’s aspiration for fair justice will remain a dream, and the country will gradually turn into a police state,” Fakhrul said.
