High Court clears way for trial of Tarique

The High Court on Sunday cleared the way for proceeding with a money-laundering case against Tarique Rahman, BNP’s senior vice-chairman and opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s eldest son, and his friend and business partner Giasuddin Al Mamun.

The court rejected a criminal revision petition filed by Mamun in April challenging the legality of the case proceedings.

Mamun, now in custody, told a special court that during the regime of military-controlled interim government had sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment in connection with a case filed for laundering Tk204.1m.

The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with the Cantonment police station in October 2009, accusing Tarique and Mamun of laundering the amount to Singapore between 2003 and 2007.
