October 25 last day of my government: Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday warned her party’s lawmakers to remain careful about delivering speech at the House since the ninth parliament would drop its curtain on October 25.

The Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, also the Leader of the House, said, the last day of the ninth Parliament would be October 25 and the next general election would be held under the interim government in ways similar to those in other countries having parliamentary democracy.

She made it clear while addressing Awami League lawmakers at the party’s Parliamentary Party (ALPP) meeting yesterday at the Parliament, meeting sources said.

The incumbent grand alliance government formed the government on January 25 following the landslide victory in the national election, held in 2008. As per constitutional provisions, election would be held before 90 days from 24 January, 2014.

Sources said at one stage, main opposition BNP’s senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman’s issue came up in the discussion when the Premier termed him a ‘killer’.

“Tarique Rahman is a accused of the August 21 Grenade attack case. He is the killer of the IVY Rahman,” a lawmaker who attended the meeting quoted Hasina as saying.

Addressing the AL MPs, Sheikh Hasina asked them to be careful about delivering speech at the House so that the opposition MPs would not get the scope to stage a walkout.

The Leader of the House, in her address, blamed BNP’s senior lawmakers for trying to “harass the new Speaker in many ways.”

“The BNP failed and will not be successful as the ruling party elected a capable person in this post,” Hasina told the meeting.

She also asked her party lawmakers to frequently visit their own constituencies and take care of the development activities along with the grass-roots level leaders and activists.

“The MPs who have no proper communication with his/her constituency will not be considered for nomination,”

Hasina warned the lawmakers and informed that the party would nominate its candidate for national polls considering the grassroots opinion.

She asked the AL MPs to describe the development activities that were conducted during the present. Sources said at the meeting AL senior leader Amir

Hossain Amu criticised the disaster management minister, AH Mahmood Ali, for inequal distribution of development funds like Test Relief (TR), Khabikha (Food for Work) and urged the PM to take initiatives for equal distribution of development funds through MPs.
