Budget a ‘big, beautiful, blue, balloon’: BNP

Main opposition BNP on Thursday said this budget is not a highly ambitious budget compared to the necessity but it would not be possible to implement it completely.

The opposition said expectations of the people have not been reflected in the proposed budget and all they focused is on the upcoming national elections.

The party also said there were no directives in the Finance Minister’s speech to overcome the prevailing crisis.

“It is not possible to implement the budget since there is no guideline on how the funding of the budget will be met and due to the poor state of the government’s administration,” MK Anwar MP told journalists at the parliament’s media house.

The BNP leader said, “There is no relation between the funding of the budget and the reality and the budget has no directives for the nation.”

“Finance Minister’s budget proposal is nothing but the citation of the government’s satisfaction. There are no directives for the people of the country. Through this budget, the poor peoples’ sufferings will be increased,” he said.

MK Anwar, a standing committee member of the party, said the budget has nothing about good governance, freedom of judiciary, free from the politicisation of administration and ensuring freedom of press.

Anwar alleged the growth of rate is decreasing every year though the Finance Minister is saying the growth will be 6.3. “Many people will come under tax net.”

Anwar said in general the subsidies have been decreased to eight percent in the economy.

The allocation in the agriculture sector has been decreased by 18% along with decrease 25% in subsidies in this year.

Condemning allocation for constructing Padma Bridge, Anwar, also a former minister, said, “Such allocation would definitely create an upset situation in the country’s economy which will sustain for a long time.”

Anwar also said the government took the Padma issue as a matter of ‘political ego’ which is hampering the country’s economy.

“I think if they have waited for sometimes, the World Bank or other funding agencies could have allocated money for the bridge.”

Condemning the opportunity of whitening black money, Anwar, also a former finance secretary said the government is leading the people of the country to be unethical a corrupt as it has expanded the area of whitening black money this year which is also a rare in the recent past.

The BNP lawmaker said the block allocation has increased this year budget proposal but where the block allocation will be used is not clear.

Regarding the budget allocation for the army, Anwar said, “Our army should be strengthened.”

Responding to a query, Moudud Ahmed MP said, “General peoples’ expectations have not been reflected in this budget. It’s (this budget) a big beautiful blue balloon.”

Moudud also said, “Not only the businessmen but the party people have also pressured finance minister to open the door of whitening black money because the party men will whiten the black money which they plundered during the last four years.”
