BNP announces countrywide protests over arrest of supporters during by-polls

BNP has announced holding of protest rallies across Bangladesh over the arrest of their leaders and activists during the by-elections to the Dhaka 18, and Sirajganj 1 constituencies.

The protest rallies will be held in Dhaka on Saturday, and across the country on Sunday.

The party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcement during a press conference at BNP chairperson's political office in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on Friday afternoon.

Mirza Fakhrul said that like all the previous elections held under this government, the two by-elections were marred by massive fraud, irregularities, and vote rigging.

“Meanwhile, more than two hundred leaders and activists have been arrested on sabotage charges. We will hold rallies to protest over these matters,” he added.

Candidates with the ticket of the ruling party, Awami League, secured easy wins in the by-polls to the Dhaka 18 and Sirajganj 1 constituencies on Thursday.

Meanwhile, BNP candidates of both constituencies rejected the results of the by-elections alleging that the polls were marred by various irregularities.

Voter turnout in Dhaka 18 was a meagre 14.18%, while it was a surprising 51.76% in Sirajganj 1, according to data from the Election Commission.
