Comilla Mayor Sakku touches PM's feet at swearing-in ceremony

A picture of Comilla City Corporation Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku seeking Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's blessing after he was sworn-in has emerged. Sakku contested March's mayoral polls with the BNP's backing and defeated the Awami League-backed candidate to win a second consecutive term.

The photo shows Sakku touching the prime minister's feet, as Sheikh Hasina smiles and places her hand on the mayor's shoulder. A bemused LGRD Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain looks on and claps. The mayor was sworn-in on Thursday at the Prime Minister's Office. “She is my elder,” Sakku said, reports Bangla Tribune. “So, I showed her respect.” It is common practice in the sub-continent for the young to touch the feet of their elders as a show of deference. Sakku's wife Afroza Jesmin, who was present at the ceremony, also touched the prime minister's feet and praised Hasina's candid pictures on the Cox's Bazar sea beach.
