A new platform of lawyers, “Jatiya Ainjibi Oikya Front,” has been launched to “restore democracy, ensure an independent judiciary, and to establish the rule of law and people's voting rights in the country.”
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Zainul Abedin and its Secretary Mahbub Uddin Khokon have been made convener and member secretary of the 301-member convening committee of the platform on Saturday.
Zainul made the announcement at a meeting of lawyers at the SCBA auditorium in the afternoon, reports UNB.
A 19-member steering committee has been constituted to formulate policy of the organization.
Apart from Zainul and Khokon, former caretaker government Adviser Barrister Mainul Hosein, BNP Vice-Chairman Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, former attorney general AJ Mohammad Ali, and Gana Forum Executive President Subrata Chowdhury, are there in the steering committee.
Zainul said they plan to hold a grand rally of lawyers soon.
He said the thoughts and demands of Jatiya Ainjibi Oikya Front and Jatiya Oikya Front arethe same.
"We'll support Jatiya Oikya Front," Zainul added.
On October 13, BNP, together with Dr Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikya Prokriya, JSD, and Nagorik Oikya, launched the Jatiya Oikya Front to press their seven-point demand, including holding the next polls under a non-party administration.
