The US has urged Awami League and BNP candidates of Gazipur City Corporation polls to organize peaceful campaigns and ensure free and fair elections.
The request was made when a three-member delegation of the US embassy in Dhaka, headed by political, economic and commercial officer William Moeller, met Awami League candidate Jahangir Alam and BNP candidate Hasan Uddin Sarker separately in Gazipur on Thursday.
Moeller hoped the people of Gazipur will elect a mayor in the elections, which will be free and fair.
Later at a press briefing, the Awami League backed candidate said the US delegation came to observe the election process on behalf of their country.
“We have briefed the delegation on the overall situation. If elected I would like to work for the development of the city corporation under the assistance of the US,” said Jahangir Alam.
The BNP candidate said he demanded a level-playing field in the elections, during the meeting with the delegation.
