He made this declaration as part of his speech as the chief guest for the launch of three books at the Ekushey Book Fair at Bangla Academy.
Earlier, various BNP officials had spoken out against the appointment of the CEC, claiming that his ties to the government were strong and the he would continue to favour them in his new position.
Fakhrul had claimed that the CEC was not skilled enough to perform his duty as the head of the constitutional body, and so his appointment as the CEC was a clear indication of political consideration.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed had concurred, stating: "His (CEC KM Nurul Huda) statements after getting appointed as the chief election commissioner has made it clear that he is a committed Awami Leaguer.”
BNP leaders feared that Nurul would be unable to remain neutral and would allow his loyalty toward the AL to affect the outcome of the elections.
Noting the Bauphal Awami League leaders' recent warm welcome of the CEC, where they adorned him with garlands, Fakhrul said it clearly proved that Nurul had a relationship with the party.
Reiterating BNP's stance, Fakhrul said: “Again we want to say that a commission led by this CEC will never hold a fair election because it is clear to the nation that his is a partisan mentality.”
“When we lose our democracy, our right to the freedom of speech, we are reminded of the language movements of 1952. It inspires us to remember to fight and take back our rights,” Fakhrul added.
When questioned about the acquittal of SNC-Lavalin officials in the Padma Bridge graft case, Fakhrul said: “The case is over. We never make any comments about the judgments of courts.”
