In separate programmes, Awami League leaders Suranjit Sengupta and Mahbubul Alam Hanif have urged the countrymen to boycott BNP chief Khaleda Zia and her party.
Suranjit Sengupta said calls for dialogue on the constitution should not come from the BNP leadership as the party itself was founded rejecting the constitution.
The AL advisory council member blamed BNP founder Ziaur Rahman for founding the party during army rule, and alleged that Khaleda Zia and Jamaat had foiled the constitution when their alliance came to power in 2001.
“Development and democracy have being going on parallel together, so I tell the people to reject the call [for dialogue] from the BNP,” Suranjit told a remembrance programme for AL leader MA Aziz at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Friday.
Meanwhile, in another programme, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif accused BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia of imitating Pakistan's policies and ideologies.
“Pakistan said there had been no genocide in Bangladesh. Echoing the same tune, Khaleda Zia said Pakistani forces did not commit genocide in Bangladesh. She has been acting like a lackey of Pakistan distorting the history of the Liberation War,” he told the inaugural council session of Bangladesh United Islamic Party at the Institution of Engineers auditorium in the capital's Ramna.
“It is not true that the students of Qaumi Madrasas are militants and terrorists as there are some pro-liberation elements in them. Islam is a religion of peace but Jamaat has been frantically trying to ruin the country with a plea that Islam is at stake,” he said.
Hanif said those who are trying to ruin the state in the name of religion should be identified.
“Jamaat has been killing people like what they did in 1971. They want to assume power by killing people. Those who preached Islam and worked for spreading the religion in the sub-continent never assumed power nor killed people,” Hanif said.
He further said due to her destructive politics, the countrymen should boycott Khaleda Zia and the BNP.
