The BNP-led 20-party alliance leaders will conduct campaign for its candidates in the upcoming municipal election.
The decision was taken at a secretary general-level meeting of the alliance held at BNP chief's Gulshan office on Saturday.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir briefed reporters after the meeting.
“The meeting has decided to extend full support to the 20-party alliance candidates. We will jointly take part in the electioneering," Fakhrul said.
He also alleged that the alliance candidates are facing harassment and torture.
"Some of the candidates could not campaign for the election in apprehension of arrest," he went on.
The BNP leader also demanded the Election Commission to conduct the poll in a free and fair manner.
Elections in the country’s 234 municipalities is slated to be held on December 30.
First of its kind, the country is going to see political party-backed municipality race across the country, but the race of the councillors will be non-partisan manner.
On November 19, the parliament passed the Local Government (Municipality) (Amendment) Bill 2015, paving the way for arranging elections only for the mayoral posts in the municipalities on a partisan basis.
