Mahbub Ur Rahman, freedom fighter and engineer, passed away on Thursday at the age of 74.
He was born in Jamalpur in 1950 and lived in Savar and Uttara in his later years.
He studied at Dhaka College and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and was involved with left politics in his student days, participating in the Liberation War.
He was one of the founding engineers of the Local Government Engineering Department (then Bureau) in the 1970s —that agency played a crucial role in laying the foundation for the rural development of Bangladesh.
Rahman worked as a civil engineer in countries ranging from Vietnam to Uzbekistan during 1988-2018, but Bangladesh remained in his heart.
He had developed a passion for road safety later in his career, and worked with the Bangladesh government in the mid-2000s on developing the country’s road safety policy framework.
He is survived by a son, a daughter and a grandson.
His namaz-e-janaza will be held at the Central Jame Masjid of BSMMU after Zuhr prayers on Monday.
