PM Tarique: 27.5m to be brought under Farmer Card system

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday said around 27.5 million farmers will be brought under the Farmer Card system over the next few years.

He made the remarks in parliament during the sixth day of the first session of the 13th National Parliament.

He said nearly 22,000 farmers have already been included in a pilot project, which is set to begin in 10 districts on Pohela Boishakh.

“We are going to launch the Farmer Card, In Sha Allah, on the 14th, on Pohela Boishakh. Under this pilot program, around 22,000 farmers have already been brought in,” Tarique Rahman said.

He added: “According to the government’s estimate, there are around 27.5 million farmers, plus or minus. In Sha Allah, over the next few years, we will try, and our government plans to reach all farmers.”

In response to another lawmaker’s question, the prime minister said each beneficiary will receive Tk 2,500 a year under the Farmer Card and Tk 2,500 a month under the Family Card.

He added that the number of cards will be increased gradually through higher budget allocations each year.
