Bogra University eyes first student intake in 2026-27

Bogra University is preparing to admit its first batch of students in the 2026-27 academic session, ending a 25-year wait for the institution to become operational.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Kudarat-e-Jahan announced the plan at a press briefing held at the university’s temporary academic building. He said admissions would begin through the cluster-based system, subject to final approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Bogra University of Science and Technology Act was passed in 2001, but the institution never became operational. A new law, gazetted on July 16 and effective from July 19, has paved the way for its transformation into a full-fledged multidisciplinary university, the vice-chancellor said.

He said the new law differed significantly from the 2001 legislation, delaying preparations for the university’s launch. Academic and administrative preparations had since been completed over the past two and a half months.

The university has recruited 11 staff members on a contractual basis, including four officers and seven employees. Six members have been appointed to its 17-member syndicate. The syndicate and academic council will take final decisions once the required membership is complete, he said.

The temporary campus has smart-board-equipped classrooms, a computer laboratory, safety measures and safe drinking water. A UGC delegation led by members Prof Abdullah Al Mamun and Prof Muniar recently visited the campus to assess its readiness.

The university has proposed nine employment-oriented disciplines, including artificial intelligence, robotics, computer science and financial technology (fintech), for UGC approval. Once approval is secured, student admissions will be started through the scheduled cluster-based admission test in March, the vice-chancellor said.

He also pledged a zero-tolerance policy towards nepotism in teacher recruitment, saying appointments would be based on merit rather than personal connections or recommendations.
