Gas shortage halts Jamuna Fertilizer Factory again

Production at the state-owned Jamuna Fertilizer Company Limited (JFCL) in Sarishabari, Jamalpur, was suspended again on Sunday due to a gas supply shortage, just two days after operations resumed following repairs to a boiler leak.

The shutdown occurred around 5am after Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited and Petrobangla stopped supplying gas to the factory.

The plant resumed production at around 10am on Friday after remaining closed for 15 days to repair the boiler leak. However, officials had warned that inadequate gas pressure could force another shutdown.

The factory has faced repeated disruptions over the past two and a half years due to gas shortages and mechanical problems.

JFCL Additional Chief Engineer (Chemical) Md Fazlul Haque said the factory requires 42-43 million cubic feet of gas daily to maintain uninterrupted urea production.

He said production could resume once gas supply was restored, provided the required pressure was maintained.

The factory has a daily urea production capacity of around 1,700 tonnes and can produce 1,400-1,500 tonnes under favourable operating conditions.

Its urea supplies serve 19 districts, including Jamalpur, Sherpur and Tangail. Prolonged shutdowns could disrupt fertiliser supplies, particularly during the upcoming Boro rice cultivation season, increasing dependence on imports and putting farmers under pressure.
