A woman who suffered severe burns in a gas explosion in Narayanganj died on Monday, two days after her eight-year-old son succumbed to his injuries.
Beauty Akter, 24, died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka on Monday morning.
Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, a physician at the institute, said around 80% of Beauty’s body was burned. Earlier on Saturday morning, her son Maruf died at the same hospital.
Beauty’s husband, Maidul, a mason by profession, is still undergoing treatment at the hospital with burns covering 85% of his body. His condition is critical, doctors said.
The explosion occurred around 7:30 am on Friday at a tin-shed rented house in Kuripara Chapatali area of Bandar upazila.
According to local residents, gas accumulated inside the house following a leak. Maidul reportedly tried to light a match to smoke a cigarette, triggering the accumulated gas and causing the explosion.
Three family members were severely burned in the blast. Locals rescued them and took them to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for treatment.
Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the explosion was caused by gas that leaked from a gas line in the kitchen and accumulated inside the house.
