State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku on Friday said that newspapers are one of the main driving forces of any country, playing a vital role in guiding society and highlighting its problems.
Speaking at the publication ceremony of the newly launched weekly ‘Somoy Torongo’ in Tangail, the state minister said the media helps expose various social irregularities and corruption, while also providing direction so that people can move forward and society can function in an orderly and democratic manner.
"However, there is also irresponsible journalism. Such practices must be avoided," he said. "A newspaper is one of the principal driving forces of a nation, helping steer the country in the right direction."
Addressing the gathering, Tuku said Tangail is a large and prosperous district with many achievements to its credit. "There is much to be proud of in Tangail. To move the district forward, people from all professions must work together in unity. Everyone must abide by the rules," he said.
He also emphasized the government's commitment to democratic values, saying, "We will never obstruct the democratic process. We will not interfere with anyone's freedom. We will extend our fullest cooperation to journalists, who will independently choose their own leadership."
Chaired by Roshan Ali, Editor and Publisher of the weekly Somoy Torongo, the program was also attended by Hasanuzzaman Shahin, President of Tangail District BNP, Mahmudul Haque Sanu, former Member Secretary, Azgar Ali, President of Sadar Upazila BNP, Jafar Ahmed, Secretary General of the Bangladesh Regional Newspapers Council, Kazi Zakirul Molla, General Secretary of the Tangail Press Club, and Mamunur Rahman, President of the Tangail Television Reporters Forum.
The program was conducted by journalist Malek Adnan. Prominent social and cultural personalities, journalists, and people from various professions were also present at the event.
