Man to die for killing ex-wife in Narayanganj

A Narayanganj court on Tuesday sentenced a man to death for killing his ex-wife three and a half years ago.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Nivana Khair Jessy delivered the verdict. Convict Moktar Ali, 51, was present in court when the judgment was announced. In addition to the death penalty, the court fined him Tk 20,000.

According to the prosecution, Fatema Akter Rekha married Moktar Ali in 2006 after divorcing her first husband. But their marriage was marked by frequent disputes and allegations of domestic violence. They divorced in October 2022. Prosecutors said Moktar Ali continued pressuring Rekha to remarry him after the separation.

On the night of November 20, 2022, Moktar Ali entered Rekha's residence in Fatullah, strangled her, and repeatedly assaulted her with a metal pipe and a screwdriver before fleeing the scene.

Following the killing, Rekha's mother, Sajeda Begum, filed a murder case against him. After his arrest, Moktar Ali gave a confessional statement before a magistrate. The court convicted him after considering the testimony of 13 prosecution witnesses and other evidence presented during the trial.
