The Chittagong District Primary Education Office has ordered the suspension of classes at government primary schools affected by waterlogging caused by continuous rainfall.
The directive applies to schools where classrooms, playgrounds or access roads have been inundated. Classes have also been suspended at schools being used as emergency shelters for as long as they continue to serve that purpose.
Chittagong District Primary Education Officer Firoz Ahmad confirmed the decision to Dhaka Tribune on Thursday.
In a directive issued on Wednesday and signed by Firoz Ahmad, the district education office instructed that classes must remain suspended at all government primary schools where heavy rainfall has caused waterlogging in classrooms, school grounds or approach roads.
The order also said that any primary school currently operating as a shelter centre must keep academic activities suspended for the entire period it is used for sheltering people.
The directive warned authorities not to resume classes at flooded or otherwise unsafe schools under any circumstances.
It has been sent to all upazila education officers in Chittagong district, who have been instructed to inform assistant upazila primary education officers and head teachers of government primary schools under their jurisdiction and take the necessary measures.
Firoz Ahmad said teaching activities would continue at schools that have not been affected by waterlogging or transportation problems.
