Woman dies after falling into open drain amid waterlogging in Gazipur

A young woman died after falling into an open drain amid severe waterlogging in the Bhogra area of Gazipur city on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Nazma Khatun, 26, daughter of Abdul Bari from the Baladanga area of the Satkhira district.

Nazma fell into the uncovered drain on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the evening after the road went under water due to heavy rainfall, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Basan Police Station Harun Or Rashid.

On information, firefighters rushed to the scene and conducted a rescue operation, he said, adding that they recovered her body about 40 minutes later off a short distance from the spot.

Later, the body was sent to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The OC said police could not initially locate any close relatives of Nazma in Gazipur and informed authorities in Satkhira of the incident.

On July 27 last year, a similar incident occurred in the Tongi area of Gazipur when a woman named Faria Tasnim went missing after falling into an open drain.

Firefighters later recovered her body three days later from a wetland nearly one kilometer from the spot.
