Freedom fighter Syed Merajul Hossain laid to rest

Veteran freedom fighter, eminent journalist, educator, and senior political leader Syed Merajul Hossain was laid to rest with state honors in Thakurgaon on Saturday.

He was 83.

A police contingent accorded a guard of honor to the late freedom fighter at the Thakurgaon Public Club grounds on behalf of the district administration. Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Khairul Islam paid tribute by placing a wreath.

Hossain passed away at Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhaka on Friday afternoon after a prolonged illness. His death has been widely mourned across Thakurgaon, where he was respected for his contributions to education, journalism, politics, and the Liberation War.

People from different political, social, and cultural organizations gathered at Thakurgaon Press Club to pay their final respects. Tributes were offered by the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), journalists, educators, and civil society representatives.

A founding member and former president of Thakurgaon Press Club, Hossain worked with several national media outlets, including BSS, The Daily Observer, and Daily Sun. He was regarded as a pioneer of English-language journalism in northern Bangladesh.

A central leader of the CPB and an officially recognized freedom fighter, he also played a significant role in local development movements. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and numerous admirers.
