A journalist has been arrested in Gazipur in a case filed over a news report concerning allegations against LGRD State Minister Mir Shahe Alam in Bogra.
The arrested journalist has been identified as Rezanur Islam, acting editor of Dainik Agrajatra Pratidin.
A team of Bogra Detective Branch (DB) police arrested Rezanur on Thursday night from the Board Bazar area under Gacha union in Gazipur Sadar upazila. He was later sent to Bogra jail on Friday under a court order, said Bogra Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) Ataur Rahman.
The case was filed on June 15 following the publication of a report regarding alleged corruption involving Bogra-2 (Shibganj) lawmaker and LGRD State Minister Mir Shahe Alam.
Tanvir Alam Rimon, treasurer of Bogra Press Club and northern regional representative of The New Nation, filed the case against six individuals, including the editor and publisher of the newspaper.
A senior judicial magistrate ordered legal action against the accused and directed that the case be recorded as a first information report (FIR) at Bogra Sadar Police Station.
Those named in the case include publisher and editor of Dainik Agrojatra Pratidin Mehdi Hasan, acting editor Rezanur Islam, news editor Ashraf Ali Faruqi, reporter Saleh Kaisar, Bogra correspondent Md Shams, and district correspondent Sabbir Hasan.
In the complaint, the plaintiff alleged that the accused intentionally published and circulated “false, fabricated and misleading information” to damage the personal, social and political reputation of both the complainant and State Minister Mir Shah Alam.
It further stated that remarks made at a June 12 press conference at Bogra Press Club were distorted and circulated on social media under a headline describing the minister as a “controversial ‘road incident’ minister”.
The complaint also alleged that on June 13, provocative and defamatory content about the minister was circulated on social media ahead of the prime minister’s national visit.
The plaintiff said the information was shared without credible evidence, causing reputational damage and public confusion.
Police later recorded the case under multiple sections of the Cyber Security Act 2026, and Sub-Inspector Rahmatullah Manik of Bogra DB was assigned to investigate.
Rezanur Islam is the son of Jalil Mia of the Bosura area under Joydebpur upazila in Gazipur.
He was produced before a court on Friday and sent to jail.
Police said drives are ongoing to arrest the remaining accused.
