The 3rd Armed Police Battalion (3 APBN) on Sunday inaugurated a month-long tree plantation programme at its Shiromani headquarters in Khulna as part of the Prime Minister's nationwide initiative to plant 250 million trees over five years.
Additional DIG M M Salahuddin, Commander of 3 APBN, formally inaugurated the programme at the onset of the Bengali month of Ashar.
Deputy Commander and Superintendent of Police G M Abul Kalam Azad (PPM), Assistant Superintendent of Police Ali Nawaz and officers and personnel of the battalion were present at the event.
As part of the initiative, 500 saplings of fruit-bearing, forest, medicinal and flowering trees were planted on the opening day.
The species planted include mango, blackberry (jam), litchi, papaya, bilati gab, chalta, pomegranate, coconut, custard apple (ata), jackfruit, pomelo (jambura), hog plum (amra), almond (kathbadam), sharifa, guava, mulberry, kadabel, star fruit (kamaranga), Japanese creeper, behera, haritaki, bay leaf, cinnamon, arjun and sonalu, among others.
A variety of flowering and ornamental plants, including sheuli, krishnachura, orchid, gladiolus, rangan, beli, hasnahena, hibiscus (jaba) and rose, were also planted to beautify the premises and create a greener workplace.
The month-long programme aims to plant a total of 1,001 trees.
Speaking at the inauguration, Additional DIG Salahuddin highlighted the importance of tree plantation in mitigating the impacts of climate change and ensuring a habitable planet for future generations. He urged all to take part in afforestation efforts to protect the environment and maintain ecological balance.
