Eight people, including five police personnel, were injured during an anti-drug drive in Fatullah, Narayanganj, after drug traders allegedly attacked law enforcers with bricks and fired gunshots on Saturday night.
Police arrested three suspected drug dealers, including alleged drug trader ‘Fighter Monir,’ and recovered a large quantity of drugs during the raid.
The incident took place around 11pm at Patengar Mor in the Masdair area.
The injured police members are Sub-Inspectors Nandan Sarkar and Monir, Assistant Sub-Inspectors Kamrul Hasan and Monir Hossain, and Constable Ashik. Three civilians — Helal Uddin, driver Babu and AKM Shafiuddin — were also injured.
All injured were admitted to Khanpur Hospital in Narayanganj, Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Alam said.
Police said a team conducted the operation based on a tip-off at Fighter Monir’s drug den, where Monir and his associates Nayeem and Masum were arrested with drugs.
Following the arrests, associates of the detained suspects allegedly tried to snatch them from police custody and began throwing bricks at law enforcers. They also fired around five to six rounds targeting police, according to officials.
Police fired two rounds of shotgun shells in response.
No one sustained bullet injuries, but several were hurt by brick impacts, police said.
The OC said the drive was continuing and details of the seized drugs would be disclosed later.
Authorities added that similar attacks on law enforcement during anti-drug drives have recently been reported in the Masdair area.
