Over 51,000 sacrificial animals ready for Eid-ul-Azha in Dhamrai

Ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, around 51,508 sacrificial animals have been prepared in Dhamrai, according to the Department of Livestock.

Officials said nearly 300 farmers in the area have raised 1,225 cows, 31,043 bulls, 240 oxen, 40 buffaloes, 16,560 goats, and 2,400 sheep this year. Of these, the total number of cattle stands at 32,548.

According to local livestock authorities, the demand for sacrificial animals in Dhamrai is estimated at around 35,000. After meeting local demand, approximately 17,000 additional cattle are expected to be supplied to Dhaka and nearby regions.

Farmers and livestock breeders said many of this year’s animals were raised and fattened using natural and traditional methods ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. They are now spending busy days caring for the animals in hopes of earning better profits during the festival season.

Visits to several farms and households of marginal farmers revealed that livestock owners are regularly bathing the animals, collecting fresh grass, ensuring adequate light and ventilation, conducting routine health check-ups, and arranging veterinary services. However, farmers said the costs of feed, medicine, and treatment have increased significantly compared to previous years.

Farmer Md Anwar Hossain of Dhamrai said he has prepared 20 cows for Eid-ul-Azha this year.

“We raised the calves naturally by feeding them fresh grass and rice husks. Traders are currently offering between Tk 200,000 and Tk 300,000 for each cow. However, I hope prices will increase further,” he said.

Dhamrai Upazila Livestock Officer Md Mizanur Rahman said a total of 51,508 cows, buffaloes, goats, and sheep have been prepared for sacrifice in the area this year. In addition to local breeds, farmers have also raised Nepalese, Australian, Friesian, and Haryana breeds of cattle.

He added that after fulfilling local demand, the remaining animals will be supplied to different parts of the country, including Dhaka.
