A suspected thief, Selim Mia (32), was killed in a mob beating after allegedly breaking into a house in Chatua Matalpara village of Majhihatta union in Shibganj upazila of Bogra early Friday.
According to police and local sources, Selim and two accomplices entered the house of Gopal Chandra around 3:00 am on Thursday night. They reportedly held family members hostage at knifepoint and looted Tk 3.5 lakh in cash and about 8.5 bhori of gold ornaments, including jewellery.
When the family screamed for help, locals rushed to the scene and surrounded the house. Two suspects managed to flee, but Selim was caught by villagers. He was allegedly beaten severely by an angry mob and died on the spot before police reached the spot.
Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahinuzzaman Shahin said police recovered the body and sent it to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Separate cases will be filed over the theft and the death. Police said a murder case may also be accepted if the victim’s family files a complaint.
