Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said that a “frustrated group” in the country is trying to create instability in society at different times.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion marking the 165th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore at Patisar in Naogaon around 11:00 am.
The minister said the political landscape of Bangladesh remains unclear, adding that the people of the country have repeatedly fought and struggled for change, yet meaningful transformation has not come.
“We must always remember that our foremost identity is being Bangladeshi, shaped through the spirit and participation of the 1971 Liberation War. Independence did not come easily; it was achieved through nine months of war. Democracy, too, had to be restored through struggle. We stand against occupying forces and domination,” he said.
Referring to Tagore’s contributions in the region, he said the Nobel laureate had begun a new chapter of his life in this area. Seeing the suffering and hardships of farmers, Tagore established an agricultural bank and introduced modern farming practices, including mechanized ploughs, to modernize agriculture.
He described Tagore as a poet of universal humanity whose poetry and literature continue to inspire people in all aspects of life. “Through his poetry, songs, dramas, and literary works, Tagore left an extraordinary mark in every field. His work Gitanjali moved the entire world,” he added.
The discussion meeting was chaired by Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Dr ANM Bazlur Rashid.
Among others present at the event were Land Minister Mizanur Rahman Minu, State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayem, Whip Advocate M. Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu, Rajshahi Deputy Inspector General of Police Mohammad Shahjahan, Naogaon Zila Parishad Administrator Abu Bakkar Siddik, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam and Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tarikul Islam.
Later, artistes from Dhaka and local performers presented recitations, songs and dance performances at the function.
