Two fishermen rescued, one pirate arrested

The Coast Guard has rescued two fishermen and arrested an active member of the “Dayal” pirate group along with firearms and ammunition during two separate operations in the Sundarbans under “Operation Mangrove Shield.”

The information was confirmed on Friday afternoon by Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Suman.

He said that the Bangladesh Coast Guard has taken a strict stance against all active forest pirate groups in the Sundarbans region. As part of this effort, two special operations titled “Operation Restore Peace in the Sundarbans” and “Operation Mangrove Shield” are being conducted.

Under “Operation Mangrove Shield,” two successful raids were carried out at different locations in the Sundarbans. During these operations, two fishermen along with their fishing boat were safely rescued from captivity by the Boro Jahangir gang. Separately, an active member of the notorious Dayal gang was arrested with weapons and ammunition.

During another operation, the pirates attempted to flee into the forest upon detecting the Coast Guard. However, the team chased them and arrested one active member of the Dayal gang, identified as 35-year-old Tarekul of Koyra upazila in Khulna district. Two single-barrel guns and nine rounds of live ammunition were also recovered.

Authorities said the arrested suspect, seized weapons, and ammunition will be handed over for legal proceedings, while the rescued fishermen will be returned to their families.

The Coast Guard further stated that operations will continue in the future to completely free the Sundarbans from piracy.
