Fuel strike shuts petrol pumps, CNG stations in Sylhet

Petrol pump and CNG station owners in Sylhet have called an indefinite strike, shutting down all fuel stations across the division’s four districts in protest against alleged harassment and fines.

All CNG stations, LPG outlets, petrol pumps and diesel sales centres were declared closed from around 11pm on Wednesday following the sudden announcement.

Barrister Riashad Azim Haque Adnan, acting president of the pump owners’ association, said one of their members—who owns four pumps—was detained after allegedly selling fuel supplied for a single vehicle across multiple outlets.

“After receiving information that he was detained at night, pump owners went to the Moglabazar police station,” he said.

He added: “We want to conduct business in an orderly manner. However, this strike will continue until the administration stops what we believe is targeted harassment and releases the detained owner.”

Pump owners allege that they are being subjected to excessive fines and harassment during raids without valid justification.
