The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won four out of six parliamentary constituencies in Khulna while Jamaat-e-Islami secured two seats, according to unofficial results announced late Thursday night following vote counting.
The results were declared separately by ASM Jamshed Khondoker, Khulna Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer for constituencies 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6, and Faisal Kader, Returning Officer and Regional Election Officer for Khulna-3.
The election also witnessed the defeat of two heavyweight candidates from BNP and Jamaat.
Khulna-1
BNP candidate Amir Ezaz Khan was declared unofficially elected after securing 121,352 votes with the party’s sheaf of paddy symbol. His nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Krishna Nandi (scales symbol), received 70,346 votes. A total of 210,899 votes were cast out of 307,103 registered voters across 120 polling centres.
Khulna-2
Jamaat-e-Islami’s metropolitan secretary Sheikh Jahangir Hossain Helal won the seat with 93,789 votes. BNP candidate Nazrul Islam Monju secured 88,197 votes. The constituency has 335,243 registered voters in 158 polling centres. Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate Amanullah received 7,298 votes.
Khulna-3
BNP central leader Rakibul Islam Bakkul was declared the unofficial winner with 74,845 votes. Jamaat candidate Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman received 66,010 votes. Out of 254,409 registered voters in 116 centers, 152,245 ballots were cast, marking a turnout of 59.84 percent.
Khulna-4
BNP’s central information affairs secretary SK Azizul Bari Helal won the seat with 123,162 votes. His closest competitor, Khelafat Andolon’s Maulana Sakhawat Hossain (wall clock symbol), secured 109,530 votes.
Helal won by a margin of 13,632 votes. The constituency has 378,453 registered voters in 145 centers, with 246,816 votes cast.
Khulna-5
BNP candidate Ali Azgar Lobi was declared elected after receiving 148,854 votes. Jamaat’s Mia Golam Parwar secured 146,246 votes in a closely contested race.
Khulna-6
Jamaat candidate Abul Kalam Azad won with 150,724 votes, defeating BNP’s SM Monirul Islam Bappi, who received 124,710 votes. The constituency has 423,332 registered voters in 156 polling centers, with 288,191 ballots cast.
