Six visually impaired students are contesting in the upcoming Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) elections, marking a significant step forward for inclusive representation in higher education.
Their candidacy reflects a growing movement across Bangladesh’s university campuses to ensure equal opportunity in student leadership, following similar participation in the Ducsu and Jucsu elections earlier this year.
These candidates, drawn from various academic departments and student panels, are vying for key positions in the central union.
Among them is Akash Das, a third-year Sociology student representing the Students Alliance of Harmony panel, who believes true equality begins when everyone has the chance to lead.
Md Mizan Mia, a Master’s student in International Relations contesting from the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal panel, emphasized that disability should never be seen as a barrier to service or leadership.
Sohel Rana, a fourth-year student of Islamic History and Culture, is running for Social Welfare and Environment Affairs Secretary from the Droho Parishad panel, pledging to improve campus accessibility.
Md Shuvo Hossain, a Master’s student of Bangla, is contesting independently for the same post, advocating for unity beyond political banners and a campaign rooted in empathy and equal access.
Surat Alam, a Master’s student of History, is also running independently, aiming to enhance mental and physical health services for all students.
Md Sadek, a second-year Political Science student from the Voice of CU panel, is contesting for Assistant Sports and Games Affairs Secretary, with a focus on inclusive participation in campus athletics.
University officials and disability rights advocates have welcomed their participation as a milestone in inclusive campus politics.
Chittagong University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Md Kamal Uddin praised the initiative, stating that the involvement of students from diverse backgrounds reflects the university’s evolving democratic spirit.
He added that this very act of participation is a victory for inclusive education.
The Cucsu and hall union elections are scheduled for Wednesday, with polling to be held across all residential halls under tight security and administrative oversight.
