Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) staged a protest and sit-in in front of the university's main gate on Tuesday afternoon, condemning threats and harassment against female students at universities across the country.
The demonstration was organized in protest against a public gang-rape threat made by Ali Husen, a student of Dhaka University's Sociology Department (academic year 2020–21) toward a female student, the reported harassment of JCD female leaders at Rajshahi University, and the growing trend of cyberbullying targeting women in higher education.
JU JCD convener Zahir Uddin Mohammad Babor presided over the program, while member secretary Wasim Ahmed Anik conducted it. Leaders and activists, including candidates from the JCD-backed Jucsu panel, also joined.
Senior Joint Convener Affan Ali said women were being deliberately targeted to drive them away from politics.
“Today, women are threatened with gang rape and harassed across the country. The same organization responsible for mass rape in 1971 is once again issuing threats. Female students are being subjected to cyberbullying in different universities,” he alleged.
Convener Babor added that conspiracies were being orchestrated to suppress female participation in movements.
“At Rajshahi University, our leaders were harassed, while here at JU, frontline activist Sohagi Samia was targeted with a mob attack over a trivial matter. It is clear there is a systematic attempt to halt women’s progress. We urge university administrations to take immediate action,” he said.
