Rail communications between Dhaka, North Bengal snap as train derails in Gazipur

Rail communications between Dhaka and North Bengal have been suspended after a Dhaka-bound Padma Express train, which had departed from Rajshahi, derailed at Joydebpur Railway Junction in Gazipur.

The derailment occurred around 8:45pm on Saturday when several carriages of the train, including the engine, came off the tracks on platform number 1, said Sub-Inspector Nadir Uz-Zaman of Joydebpur Railway Junction police outpost.

The Padma Express was entering the junction when suddenly three to four carriages, including the engine, derailed at the crossing. However, as the train was scheduled to stop there, it was travelling at a low speed. No casualties were reported, he added.

Vehicular movement on the Shibbari–Rajabari road was also stopped due to the derailment. Until the derailed train is removed, rail communications between Dhaka and North Bengal will remain suspended. The matter has been reported to higher authorities, the police official also said.
