A journalist was hacked to death in Gazipur on Thursday night in the city’s Chandna Chowrasta area.
The deceased, Md Asaduzzaman Tuhin, 38, was a staff reporter for the daily Protidiner Kagoj in Gazipur. He was originally from Bhatipara village in Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh.
A video of the murder has since gone viral on Facebook.
According to eyewitnesses, Tuhin was sitting at a tea stall in front of the Mashjid Market at the time of the attack. An altercation broke out between him and some young men who were also present at the stall.
At one point, the youths began hacking him indiscriminately with sharp weapons, killing him on the spot. Upon receiving the news, police rushed to the scene.
Shahin Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bason police station under Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP), said: "Police have been sent to the spot and the matter is under investigation."
His body has been recovered and sent to the morgue of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur.
OC Shahin said the motive and the identities of those involved in the murder have not yet been confirmed.
Later, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Robiul Islam said that one Badsha Mia was first hacked by assailants lying in wait on behalf of a woman, due to a dispute over a matter involving her.
"Journalist Tuhin recorded footage of the incident. Out of anger over why Tuhin was recording the video, they repeatedly hacked and killed him. The initial video footage clearly proves this."
Earlier in the day, around 8pm, Tuhin posted a video from his personal Facebook account showing people crossing the road however they pleased. The video has since gone viral. Afterwards, he was having tea at the shop in front of the local Mashjid Market.
