Protesters blockade Patiya station over alleged police attack

Protesters staged a blockade at Patiya police station on Wednesday morning following an alleged police attack during a clash between police and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in front of the station in Chittagong the previous night, which left at least 20 people, including four police officers, injured.

In protest against the incident, a "Patiya blockade" program began at 10am, demanding the removal of Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Zahid Md Nazmun Noor.

The protest led to the closure of the Chittagong-Arakan highway, causing severe traffic congestion on both sides of the road.

The protesters said that on Tuesday night, police baton-charged their activists, injuring several of them.

They added that they are holding the Patiya blockade to demand the removal of the OC, who they said was involved in the incident.

The demonstrators vowed to continue the program until a decision is made regarding his removal.

Superintendent of Police Md Saiful Islam Shantu said: “We are trying to resolve the matter peacefully.”

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, around 9pm, activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement detained Dipankar Talukder, a Chhatra League leader from Rangamati, in front of the central Shaheed Minar in Patiya and later took him to the premises of Patiya police station.

However, since no cases had been filed against the Chhatra League leader, the police refused to arrest him.

This escalated tensions between the activists and the police, eventually leading to a clash.

As the situation escalated, the police took the Chhatra League leader into custody and baton-charged the activists.

OC Noor said: “The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement activists brought a Chhatra League leader to the police station. Later, a mob began to form, and he was being beaten. A group of activists broke through the security barrier and attempted to storm the station with the mob. At that point, scuffles broke out with the police, injuring three to four officers.”
