60 resorts closed in Bandarban's Lama amid landslide fears

Amid risks of landslides and loss of lives caused by adverse weather, the local administration has temporarily shut down around 60 tourist resorts in Lama upazila of Bandarban.

The decision came during a meeting of the disaster preparedness committee on Sunday afternoon, said Lama Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Moin Uddin.

The UNO added that the resorts will reopen once heavy rainfall subsides and the risk of landslides is no longer present.

Meanwhile, two days of continuous downpour have caused water levels in the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers to rise, submerging low-lying areas of Bandarban Sadar, Ruma, Thanchi, Lama and Alikadam upazilas.

A total of 220 temporary shelters have been opened in all seven upazilas of the district to help residents relocate to safety.

Sanatan Kumar Mandal, acting officer of the Bandarban met office, said the district remains at risk of heavy rainfall and landslides.

A total of 129 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in the 24 hours leading up to 6pm on Sunday, he noted.
