Three children died after drowning in canals and ponds in three separate incidents in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila on Saturday afternoon.
The tragic events took place in Charramanimohon and Charruhita villages under the Sadar upazila.
Family members said the bodies were buried in their respective family graveyards following funeral prayers held later in the day.
The deceased were identified as Yasin Arafa, 4, Md Al-Amin, 5, and Alifa Akter, 2.
Yasin was the son of Sayeedul Khokon, and Al-Amin was the son of Abdul Asad—both from Charramani village in Charramanimohon union. Alifa Akter was the daughter of Sohag Hossain from Charruhita area under Charruhita union in Sadar upazila.
According to family members, Yasin and Al-Amin, who were neighbours, went to bathe in a canal in the Charramanimohon area when they both drowned.
Locals rescued them and attempted to take them to Sadar Hospital, but the two children died on the way.
Meanwhile, Alifa was playing in the yard of her house when she accidentally fell into a pond unnoticed.
Later she was pulled from the water and rushed to hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.
Confirming the incident, Sadar Hospital’s Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Arup Pal told reporters that the three children had drowned in canal and pond water.
“They had already passed away before being brought to hospital. There were no signs of injury on their bodies,” he said.
Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdul Monnaf said: “The three children drowned in separate locations—two in a canal and one in a pond. These were accidents.”
He added: “Based on appeals from local representatives and relatives, burial was allowed without post-mortem examinations. No complaints were lodged by the victims’ families.”
