Former member of Parliament for the Sirajganj-3 (Rayganj-Tarash) constituency, Prof Dr Abdul Aziz, was assaulted by a group of students and locals moments after being released on bail from jail on Tuesday night.
According to witnesses, news of Abdul’s scheduled release spread earlier in the evening, prompting a gathering of students and locals in front of the jail.
As soon as Aziz stepped out of prison, the crowd dragged and beat him before police intervened and took him into custody.
Aziz is currently in custody at Sirajganj Sadar police station.
Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sirajganj Sadar police station, said that the former MP will be shown arrested in an explosives case filed with Tarash police station and will be produced before the court for a fresh remand into jail custody.
Earlier, on the night of February 3, a team of RAB-2 arrested Abdul from Dhaka’s Kalabagan area.
He was later handed over to RAB-12 and subsequently transferred to Tarash police station in Sirajganj.
The following day (February 4), police showed him arrested in cases related to attempted murder and explosives charges and produced him before a court, which sent him to jail.
