The house of Mohammad Ali, former advisory council member of the Jamalpur District Awami League and father of actor Meher Afroz Shaon, was vandalized and set on fire on Thursday.
The incident took place around 6:30pm in the Narundi Rail Station area, Jamalpur Sadar Upazila.
Witnesses said that just before sunset, a group of students and locals organized a procession in Narundi Bazar. The procession moved through several roads before heading to Mohammad Ali’s house.
The attackers threw bricks and stones at the house before setting it on fire, they added.
Meher Afroz Shaon’s father had sought the Jamalpur-5 (Sadar) seat in the last election but did not participate after failing to secure the party’s nomination. Shaon’s mother, Tahura Ali, was an MP for the Awami League from a reserved seat in 1996.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police detained Meher Afroz Shaon on charges of conspiring against the state.
"She was taken into custody from Dhanmondi on Thursday night," confirmed Additional Police Commissioner (DB) Rezaul Karim Mallik.
