Two tourists go missing in Karnaphuli River in Kaptai

Two tourists have gone missing while swimming in the Karnaphuli River near a temple in Chitmorom union, Kaptai upazila, Rangamati.

The incident occurred around 1:30pm on Tuesday in the Sitar Ghat area of the union, according to Shri Shri Mata Sita Devi Temple's principal, Srimat Swami Jyotirmayananda Puri Maharaj, and Ward No 9 Union Parishad Member Md Sarwar.

The missing individuals are Shawon Dutta, 16, a ninth-grade student of Railway Public High School in Chittagong, and his cousin Priyanta Das.

According to Pritam Ghosh, one of their accompanying friends, they were a group of nine who rented a boat from Rangunia's Chandraghona Mission Ghat for a trip to Kaptai.

Upon reaching Sitar Ghat in the Karnaphuli River, four of them went swimming.

While two managed to return, Priyanta and Shawon disappeared.

Members of Kaptai fire service and local police arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations.

Kaptai police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Masud and Chandraghona police station OC Muhammad Shahjahan Kamal said they are at the scene, and efforts to rescue the two missing individuals are ongoing.
