Chittagong’s top-listed criminal, Sazzad Hossain, also known as Chhoto Sazzad, fled while firing shots as police launched a raid to apprehend him.
The incident left four people, including two police officers, injured.
The injured police officers are being treated at Dampara Police Hospital, while the other two are receiving care at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
The raid took place around 4am on Tuesday, when police, acting on a tip-off, targeted a house behind the Jalalabad Petrol Pump at Oxygen Mor under the jurisdiction of Bayezid Bostami police station.
Detecting the raid, Sazzad opened fire while escaping.
The gunfire injured Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASI) Faiyaz Hasminur Rubel and Raju Ahmed from Chandgaon police station, along with resident Mohammad Javed. 34 and Kajal Kanti De, 36, a security guard at the City Bank ATM booth at Oxygen Mor.
SWAT officers arrived on the scene after the incident, but Sazzad could not be found.
However, police detained Sazzad’s wife Tamanna Begum and two others from the house.
Sazzad, who is accused in 10 cases, including double murder, was the target of the operation.
CMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Rois Uddin confirmed the matter.
According to police and local sources, Sazzad resorts to shooting when his extortion demands are not met.
On September 18, he reportedly opened fire at a construction site when his demand for extortion was rejected.
The building is being constructed by 60 individuals. Local sources claim the owners paid Sazzad Tk500,000.
