Meghna Group tissue godown fire rages on after 16 hours

The fire at Meghna Pulp and Paper Mills Limited's tissue godown in Narayanganj, which began at 4am Monday, remains unextinguished even at the 16th hour mark.

Despite extensive firefighting efforts, flames continue to burn in multiple sections of the facility as of Monday evening.

Fire service personnel reported that three units were still battling the fire at 4pm, hours after it was initially brought under control at 9:30am following nearly four and a half hours of effort by 12 firefighting teams.

Deputy Director of Narayanganj Fire Service Fakhruddin Ahmed, at 5pm said: "The fire is under control but not fully extinguished. Several areas inside the godown are still ablaze, and the heat is too intense to approach some spots. We estimate it may take until 8pm or 9pm to fully put out the flames."

He added that the cause of the fire remains unknown, and the extent of the damage will be assessed once the flames are entirely doused.

The rapid spread of the fire is attributed to the godown being fully stocked with tissue raw materials and finished products.

Habibur Rahman, media officer of Meghna Group's tissue manufacturing company in Sonargaon, said that the newly constructed godown housed only tissue-related materials.

The fire reportedly broke out around 4am in the rear section of the second unit, as observed by 25 workers who were on shift duty.

Efforts to extinguish the fire are ongoing.
