Loco master suspended over death of elephant hit by train in Chunati Forest

Jamal Uddin, loco master of a special train in Cox's Bazar, has been suspended following the death of an elephant that was struck by the train in the Chunati Sanctuary area on October 14.

Bangladesh Railway authorities took action on Wednesday, responding to a request made by Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, according to a ministry press release issued on Thursday.

In light of the adviser's concerns, train speeds in sanctuary and national park areas have been instructed to be limited to 20 km/h to protect wildlife.

Additionally, a probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident. The committee, led by the Divisional Transport Officer (Chittagong), includes the Divisional Engineer-1 (Chittagong) and the Divisional Mechanical Engineer (Chittagong) from Bangladesh Railway.

The committee has been tasked with submitting its report, including recommendations, within five working days. Further measures for wildlife conservation will be taken after the report is received.

Moreover, an expert committee has been established to provide recommendations on elephant conservation and to mitigate human-elephant conflicts in the Korean EPZ area of Chittagong and surrounding regions.
