Bullet from Myanmar hits Teknaf land port

Amid intense clashes over control of Laldiya Char in Myanmar, across the Naf River from Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar, bullets from the fighting have hit the Teknaf Land Port and nearby homes.

The situation has generated panic among local residents.

Laldiya, situated on the eastern side of the Myanmar border along the Naf River, is in close proximity to the Jaliardia area of Teknaf.

Sounds of gunfire could be heard from the area around noon on Wednesday and continued regularly as of 3pm.

A bullet struck the glass window of the main building, shattering it, while another hit the front glass of a truck inside the port.

Jasim Uddin, the manager of United Land Port, which operates the Teknaf land port, reported that gunfire was suddenly heard from across the Naf River in Myanmar, with two bullets landing in the port.

One bullet hit the glass of the accounting room in the main building, while the other struck the front glass of a truck, said the official.

However, he confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident. At this time, it is unclear who was involved in the gunfire.

Meanwhile, activities at Teknaf land port of Cox’s Bazar have come to a halt after the incident.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Adnan Chowdhury confirmed the matter saying that the activities have been suspended following the firing.

Locals said bullets from an island of Myanmar have been hitting the bordering areas in Bangladesh as two groups have been clashing there.

The two sides had clashed on Sept 11. Another round of fighting began on Wednesday.

For the last several years, there has been an ongoing civil war between the junta forces and the Arakan Army in Myanmar.

Recently, intense fighting over control of Maungdaw Township has been occurring for several months.

Eyewitnesses reported that gunfire continued intermittently. This incident has caused panic in the land port area.
