Bangladeshi teen killed by BSF gunfire along Moulvibazar

A Bangladeshi teenage girl has been killed by gunfire from the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Kulaura border in Moulvibazar.

The deceased is Swarna Das, 14.

The incident occurred in the Lalarchak border area of Sharifpur Union on Sunday night.

It is reported that the BSF took the body away.

On Monday evening, when a team from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 46 Battalion visited Swarna’s home, the news spread in the area.

The deceased Swarna was the daughter of Parendra Das from Kalnigiri village in the West Juri Union of Juri Upazila. She was a student of the eighth grade at the local Nirod Bihar High School.

Parendra Das and his wife Sanjita Rani Das stated that they have four children. Their son has been living in Tripura, India, for a long time.

Sanjita, along with her youngest daughter Swarna, attempted to cross the border into India through an illegal route with the help of local brokers last night to visit their son. A couple from Chittagong was also with them.

When they reached the barbed-wire fence near the Indian border at around 9pm, the BSF opened indiscriminate fire, killing Swarna on the spot. The accompanying couple was also injured.

After the shooting stopped, Sanjita and the others took shelter in a house in Lalarchak village.

The injured couple was later sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Sanjita and her family took shelter at the home of resident and army member Zahidul Islam.

Zahidul Islam reported that around 9pm, three people came to their house seeking help.

Two of them were found to be injured from gunshots, reports Prothom Alo.

They explained the incident, and Zahidul Islam contacted the local BGB outpost.

The injured were quickly sent to the hospital, and Sanjita, who was unharmed, provided their names and addresses.

Nayek Obaid, the patrol commander of Lalarchak BOP of BGB 46-Battalion, confirmed around 9:30pm that several Bangladeshis had attempted to enter India illegally, and one had been killed by BSF gunfire.

However, the Indian authorities have not yet handed over the body of the deceased teenager.
