One drowns, 2 missing in Cox’s Bazar floods

A young Rakhine man drowned in floodwater in Ramu Upazila of Cox's Bazar on Thursday.

The deceased could not be identified.

Besides, two young men were swept away by the floodwaters coming down from upstream.

Ramu police station's officer-in-charge (OC), Abu Taher Dewan, confirmed the information.

The missing individuals are Amjad Hossain, 22, from Sayeed Hossain's family in the East Jumchhari village of Gorgonia Union, and Robiul Alam, 35, from Saleh Ahmed's family in the Dochhari Union of Naikhongchhari in Bandarban district.

Abdul Jabbar, a member of Ward no 3 of Gorgonia Union Parishad, said that Amjad Hossain was swept away by the current while crossing the road near East Jumchhari graveyard.

“We also received news that Robiul Alam was swept away by the current of the Bakkhali River from Dochhari Union in Naikhongchhari,” he said.

Around 250 families have been marooned in flood water in the ward, said the member.

Roads have been damaged and communication is cut off, he added further.

He added that homes, roads, and farmland have been submerged by the floodwater. Around 30,000 people in Gorgonia, Kachhapia, Kauarakhop, and Jowarianala unions are stranded.

Besides, the erosion of the Bakkhali River poses a serious threat to these residents.

OC Abu Taher Dewan said that a young Rakhine man from Eidgaon Union in Ramu drowned in the floodwater. His body was later recovered by locals. His identity has not been determined.

He also mentioned that the sudden flood situation has worsened, causing water levels to rise in various parts of Ramu.

Efforts are being coordinated with all relevant parties to alleviate the suffering, added the OC.
